Weldability and Fatigue Crack Initiation in 7050-T7451 Aluminium Butt Joints

Weldability and fatigue crack initiation in 7050-T7451 aluminium alloy butt joints subjected to different stress ratios owing to friction stir welding (FSW) were investigated.oem 2017-t7451 aluminium plate The results revealed that coarse secondary phases - Al23CuFe4, Al7Cu2Fe, and Al2Mg3Zn3 - were the preferred fatigue crack-initiation sites in FSW joints. On the other hand, Mg2Si was the preferred fracture-initiation point in the parent metal. Cracks nucleated in the non-Mg2Si matrix tended to propagate along dense, coarse secondary phases while cracks nucleated in the Mg2Si matrix tended to spread rapidly at high load levels.
