There are several grades of stainless steel plate, but Types 304 and 316 are the most commonly used in bulk handling applications. These two grades offer excellent corrosion resistance and are relatively easy to work with when compared to other stainless steel grades.
The 316 grade is often specified for chemical and petrochemical processing applications as it has excellent resistance to strong, corrosive chemicals.lyapm stainless steel plate Additionally, this grade has good resistance to chlorides and can be used at elevated temperatures. This grade is also useful in air pollution control systems such as flue gas desulphurization.
In addition to the basic chromium-nickel alloy found in 304, 316 has higher molybdenum content.lyapm stainless steel plate This additional molybdenum provides improved resistance to chemical attack, especially in the presence of acids such as sulfuric and phosphoric acid. This grade is also more resistant to stress corrosion cracking than the standard 304 stainless steel.
The “L” in the 316L grade refers to the low carbon content of this type of stainless steel. The lower carbon content helps to avoid the formation of chromium carbide during welding which can cause sensitization in the weld zone. This is a problem that can result in poor weld quality and increased corrosion along the weld seam.
Large flat-rolled products made from 316L stainless steel have excellent corrosion resistance to strong acids, alkaline solutions, and chlorine-containing foods. This is due to the increased nickel and molybdenum contents as well as a controlled grain size distribution which is less prone to oxidation at high temperatures. In addition, this grade is vacuum arc remelted to minimize impurities and achieve a ferrite free micro structure. Due to the superior corrosion resistance compared to standard 316L, this grade is sometimes dual certified and referred to as 316LVM.
