Alloy sheet is metal that has been formed into flat pieces, usually by an industrial process. Its thickness can vary greatly, with extremely thin pieces being called foil or leaf and pieces thicker than a quarter of an inch being called plate. The exact process that gives aluminium its ductile properties allows it to be rolled under varying temperatures and pressures to produce shapes such as rods, tubes and sheets in any useful thickness.

The most common uses of alloy sheet are in construction and building, where its corrosion resistance and lightweight attributes allow it to be easily worked into a large number of structures. It is often used as siding, wall cladding and roofing materials, for gutters and as the basis of a huge variety of insulation products and folding panels.

Its marine use is also highly significant, with aluminium being the preferred material for a large number of vessels and other marine vehicles. Its lightness helps to reduce fuel consumption and its robustness and durability mean that it is less likely to succumb to wear and tear in rough sea conditions. In addition, aluminium can be adapted to meet specific environmental and performance requirements. For example, it is non-magnetic, which can be important in some situations for preventing interference with compasses and other electronic equipment.

When selecting the right type of aluminium to use, it is necessary to consider how it will be formed and used. For instance, if it will be exposed to the elements it is crucial that it can resist corrosion and weathering. The aluminium grade that is chosen should also be based on its machinability and formability properties. A stiffer material will be easier to work with than a softer one, and it is possible to increase machinability by hardening it to improve its tensile strength.

The most common grades of rolled aluminium are 1100-0, 6016, and 7075-T6. Each of these has its own particular strengths and weaknesses. For example, the 6016 material is ideal for general forming operations, where formability and hemming performance are prioritized over strength, while the 7075 material is well suited to load bearing framework applications. The digits that follow the alloy code identify the type of aluminium being described, with the first digit indicating whether there are any alloy modifications, and the last two giving an indication of its use. For instance, a specification of 1XXX indicates that it is high corrosion resistance, but low strength, whereas 3XXX would indicate that it is good for weldability.
