The alloying components and the process are what give ph grade stainless steels their special characteristics.
The PH hardening process is comprised of three key steps: solution treatment, quenching, and aging.ph grades stainless steel During the solution treatment phase, the material is heated to a temperature range of 1040degC to 1065degC. This high temperature helps to dissolve the solute elements of the alloy in order to create a homogenous solid solution. The material is then rapidly cooled, or quenched. This rapid cooling is what prevents the solute elements from forming precipitates and it also helps to maintain a supersaturated state. The supersaturated state is critical as it prevents the formation of a bainite structure.
After the rapid cooling stage, the ph grade is then aged to increase its yield strength. This aging process is done at specific temperatures that are determined by the type of grade and the intended application. For example, a fully austenitic ph grade (types such as 17-7 PH) is heat treated to a temperature between 650 and 760degC to produce the desired mechanical properties.
Compared to other stainless steels, ph grades are insensitive to cold cracking and can be used in a wide range of applications. Due to their ability to withstand high levels of stress and fatigue, ph grades are often used in oil and gas exploration and processing. This is especially true in offshore applications where piping must be constructed at deep underwater depths. The high strength and corrosion resistance of ph grade stainless steels make them an ideal construction material.
When welding ph grades, the weldability is greatly improved when using the proper shielding gases. Proper inert gas shielding practices are critical to avoid porosity and ensure a good weld bead. When using laser beam welding on ph grades, it is important to keep the weld gap as small as possible in order to minimize heat affected zones (HAZ). It is also essential that proper weld fixturing be used to ensure that the welded area is positioned correctly in relation to the part. This will help to maintain a permissible fit-up tolerance and reduce the risk of vibration or impact damage during operation.
