The main ingredient in oem nickel alloy inconel 718 is nickel (Ni). It accounts for 55% maximum by weight of the final alloy, with chromium (Cr) and 4.75-5.5 % niobium making up the remainder. Small amounts of molybdenum (Mo), titanium (Ti), and iron (Fe) are also present. The nickel-chrome base gives the alloy its oxidation and corrosion resistance properties, while the niobium contributes to high-temperature performance.
Alloy 718 is able to withstand a wide range of temperatures, from cryogenic to above 1000degC. Its resistance to oxidation is due to the formation of a passivating oxide layer that protects the nickel matrix from damage. The corrosion resistance of the alloy is further enhanced by the addition of specific alloying elements. Nickel is particularly useful in combating chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking, while chromium improves resistance to attacks from oxidizing acids and sulfur compounds.
The alloy’s combination of strength and resistance to high temperatures makes it an ideal choice for aerospace applications, as well as for power plants and chemical processing equipment. It is commonly found in jet engines, rocket motors, spacecraft components, and fasteners. The chemical and petrochemical industries also use nickel-based superalloys in pumps, valves, flanges, and logging tools.
This material has a good ductility, which allows it to be formed into intricate shapes for manufacturing purposes. Nevertheless, the high strength of the material means that it can pose challenges for traditional manufacturing methods. The material is also sensitive to aging, which can result in the precipitation of niobium and tantalum crystals that reduce the strength of the alloy.
The alloy is a good weldable material, although it requires specialized techniques and conditions to achieve the best results. Welding in Inconel 718 can weaken the structure, and if done improperly, may even cause defects or cracks. The material can also exhibit significant thermal expansion, which can lead to dimensional instability in some applications.
To avoid these issues, many manufacturers use Inconel 718 bars that have already been aged. The bar, referred to as AMS 5663, is typically supplied in the precipitation hardened condition and has higher tensile strength and toughness than unaged material. Machining of the age-hardened alloy is more challenging than with annealed Inconel 718, but it eliminates the need for post-machining heat treatment that can cause dimensional changes and enhances the reliability of the material in a given application. This approach also saves money and time in manufacturing.
