Copper Plate Printmaking

Copper plating is used to create a number of different components in the manufacturing industry.copper plate Most often it is used for items that require electrical conductivity, such as electrical connectors and terminals, but the process can be applied to a wide variety of different materials and products. The company’s craftsmen are experts in the art of engraving and copperplate printing, a technique that dates back to the 16th century.

The first step in a printmaking project using a copper plate is to etch the surface of the metal. This is accomplished by submerging the plate in a solution called ferric chloride, which dissolves the parts of the copper exposed to it. This results in a series of lines on the surface of the plate that will hold ink when printed, allowing a printmaker to create a detailed image. The length of time a plate is etched impacts the appearance of the resulting lines, with darker lines appearing darker. An etching bath usually takes about 35 minutes to complete, and it requires good ventilation and safety equipment (gloves and goggles).

Once the plate is etched the printmaker must add details to it. This is done by engraving into the surface of the metal. Engravers use various tools to carve into the plate, from metal punches that produce repeated symbols, such as circles for towns, to finely detailed metal pens and needles. These are able to produce fine lines that give the impression of the individual venation of feathers on the neck of a gyrfalcon, for example.

An engraved copperplate can then be inked and stamped onto paper. The result is a printed version of the picture or illustration that was etched into the copper plate. This type of printing was eclipsed in the late 19th century by lithography, which is a more efficient way to produce text and photographs in books.

Aside from its obvious uses in the manufacture of printed material, copper is also a key component in many electrical applications, such as in electrical wiring and electronic circuits. It is highly conductive, resists corrosion, and can be made into durable, flexible designs. It is also used to shield electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI), preventing unwanted interference with sensitive electronic components and devices. For these reasons, you’ll find copper in everything from computers and cell phones to televisions and wireless infrastructures. All of these uses are possible because of the unique tribological properties of this remarkable metal.
